Get the Facts About EHD-fense™
Answers to the most common questions about this breakthrough water treatment system
EHD-fense is the only water treatment kit made specifically to help prevent EHD in deer. If you are new to the system or just want to make sure you are using it right, the answers below will help.
Understanding the Disease
What EHD is, how it spreads, and why it is hitting deer herds harder in recent years.
What is EHD?
Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease is a viral illness transmitted by midges. It causes high mortality in whitetail deer, especially in warm, dry seasons.
What is the difference between EHD and bluetounge?
Bluetongue (BT) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) are both viral diseases transmitted by biting midges that primarily affect deer and other ruminants, but they are caused by different variants of the hemorrhagic disease. Both occur during the late summer months when drought is more prevalent.
Does this work on bluetounge?
Yes, since bluetounge is passed on by the same genus of midge, EHD-fense will help to improve the ecosystem and food chain health which in turn will help to eliminate the midge within water sources.
How EHD-fense Works
How this 3-part system helps clean up your water and stop the midges that carry EHD.
How does EHD-fense prevent it?
By improving water quality, reducing muck, and restoring healthy microbial ecosystems, EHD-fense allows aquatic life to thrive which outcompetes the EHD-carrying midge. It also removes muck, the breeding ground midges rely on.
How will I know if EHD-fense is working?
You will see an increase in aquatic life present (frogs, beetles, dragonflies, etc.), decreased odors, improved clarity, and reduction of growth of algae.
Will EHD-fense work in stagnant water in creeks?
If a creek stops running due to drought the EHD-fense product can be used to treat these areas up until the creek starts to flow again.
Treatment Guidelines
When to treat, how much to use, and why a clean water plan matters every season.
How large of a water source does one kit treat?
One kit treats a 2,500-gallon pond or five 500-gallon water sources for five months.
Will I need to treat my water sources every year?
Yes, mother nature does not take a break from trying to degrade water quality so annual applications of the EHD-fense water treatment kit is highly recommended.
Should I treat my water sources even during a wet year?
Yes, nutrient runoff is much more common during wet/rainy years so making sure to keep nutrient levels in check is of the utmost importance.
EHD is not common in my area, should I still treat my water sources?
Yes, impaired water can also grow pathogenic bacteria and toxic algae species. Improving the water quality as a whole will benefit the wildlife on your property as well as the water quality itself.
Water Quality and Algae Control
How to spot bad water and what EHD-fense does to fix it.
How can I tell if my water quality is poor?
Look for signs like murky or foul-smelling water, excessive algae or scum, and dead fish or wildlife. Poor pond edges (eroded or bare), low water levels, and little aquatic vegetation can also indicate problems. Water testing for oxygen, pH, and nutrient levels provides a clearer assessment.
Will EHD-fense help to prevent blue-green algae?
Yes, routine applications of EHD-fense will help to reduce nutrient levels which in turn helps to change the algal species present to more desirable species such as your typical filamentous algal species.
Safety for Wildlife and Pets
Safe for deer, fish, dogs, and everything else that comes to the water.
Is EHD-fense safe for wildlife?
Yes. The ingredients are all-natural and safe for deer, birds, wildlife, pets, people, and the environment.
Is this safe for fish?
This product is 100% safe for fish and any other aquatic life. In fact, EHD-fense will actually help to also reduce fish disease and improve fishery health.
If my dogs drink the water, will they get sick?
No, this product is safe for dogs and any other pets you may have that enter the water source.
